Steve Haupt, Wolfgang Hokenmaier, Cris Cote, Nancy Schulz, Steve Lightholder, Dave ____________, and Ed Loewenton gathered at the Winter end of Route 108, near the foot of the Long Trail on Mansfield. The weather was so perfectly co-operative- 70's and sunny - that we decided to postpone the rain-date indefinitely and simply go ahead with the trip. A sweaty climb to Taft lasted about two hours. Well-trodden paths led everywhere, but we managed to locate the genuine article and stay on it. After lunch in the sun outside the Lodge, we proceeded to Eagle Pass. No trail was evident, nor really necessary; we aimed and got there. From Eagle Pass, the logical route seemed to be straight ahead and straight up. Each choosing our own method of propulsion - crampons, snowshoes, poles, ten fingers dug into the snow - we reached the summit, snacked, enjoyed the view, and watched people with suicidal tendencies ski off the chin. We hiked over the rocks to Profanity trail, and most of us chose the high-speed five-point (sitting down) technique for the first few hundred feet. It was a perfect day for it. Getting a little wet just relieved the overheating. A short rest at Taft, and we were back at the cars at about 5:20. A warm, sunny day and a good workout: what a perfect day!
