Kettler wheeled toys: Tricycles, Bicycles, Pedal Cars >> Sprint™ Balance Bike
         NEW LOWER PRICES!
The new 2008 Kettler® Sprint™ Balance (running) training bike makes learning to ride a bicycle as natural as crawling, walking, and running. Training wheels are now obsolete.  This is the new way - the right way - to learn to ride a bicycle!
Steering by shifting balance comes naturally to most children older than 2 years who can walk and run with skill.   Once balance is learned, pedaling is easy!
Sitting comfortably on the adjustable-height seat, your child is having too much fun to realize he or she is rapidly developing superior balance, reflexes, and coordination.
Whenever balance feels insecure, the feet go automatically back to the ground. Stopping is easy - just stand up, or use the new rear wheel disc hand-brake
For ages 2 to 6.

Top-quality certified by Turnertoys:
We have assembled and tested many of the balance bikes now on the market, and nothing comes close to the Sprint™ in quality and functional design detail.
We prefer a metal bike to any of the wood ones for 5 reasons:

1. The metal frames are strong enough to allow a curve or s-shape, allowing a larger open area between the seat and front wheel/steering column.  more...
2. The strength and formability of metal allows for tube-within-tube design and clamping, so handlebar and seat height are infinitely adjustable. more...
3. Tube-within-tube design and clamping also allow the steering column to be completely enclosed, thereby excluding any chance of pinched fingers. more...
4. Metal construction allows installation of extras such as handbrake and kickstand. more...
5. The metal bikes are a great deal more durable, especially in the critical joint between handlebars and steering column. For a few dollars more, the sturdy Kettler® Sprint™ will provide more play value for longer than any other balance bike we have seen. more...

All about the Sprint™ Balance Bike:
Product Features  -  Age Recommendations  -  Why a Balance Bike is the best way to learn bicycling  - A brief history of the Velocipede  - The Kettler® Standard of Quality

The new Sprint™ Balance Bike for 2008 is made in China to the exact same standards, with the same materials and processes used in Kettler's German-made products. You will appreciate the long-lasting quality and excellent design of the Kettler® Sprint™ Balance Bike. We have assembled and inspected this product at Turnertoys. We can attest that careful attention is paid in both design and manufacturing quality down to the slightest detail. The Sprint™ is in a quality class by itself. If BMW made a balance bike, it might look like this product!         See construction details ( slide show).

Sprint™ Features
*All components are solid, precise, well-engineered, designed to last.
*Limited turning arc helps avoid falls due to wheel "folding"
*12" tubeless pneumatic (air) tires, high-impact resin wheels, ball bearing hubs
*Comfortably padded, large seat is soft, molded plastic, adjustable for tilt and height just like a real bike.
*Padded handlebar and covered steering nut eliminate sharp edges and reduce danger from falling forward.
*Seat height range is approx. 13.5" to 17.5" from ground.
*Hand-operated rear wheel disc brake
*Sturdy, stable kickstand
*Low step through frame is easy to use for toddlers
*High-carbon steel frame, anti-corrosion treated inside and out.
*Maximum working load (child's weight) 100 lb
*Polyester powder coat finish is much more durable than paint, completely non-toxic. 5 year no-fade warrantee.
*Plastic parts are weatherproof, non-toxic polyethylene.
*Superb finish and workmanship throughout - smoothly functioning mechanical parts, no sharp edges.
*3-year warrantee (frame and mechanical parts)

Age recommendation: 2 to 6 years.
A child is ready for the Sprint™ velocipede running bike as soon as he or she is walking and running confidently with good balance and coordination, and can place his or her heels on the ground while sitting on the seat with knees slightly flexed. A few kids younger than 3 may be a little too short to do this.  Seat height is adjustable  from approximately 13.5" to 17.5". Regardless of the child's age, parents should not indulge in trying to "teach" the child how to ride. Children adapt naturally to a balance bike, and learning how to ride is mostly intuitive and instinctive.

Safety:
All the parts are smoothly finished, with no sharp edges.  Limited turn angle enhances stability. The steering mechanism is entirely enclosed to prevent pinched fingers, and protruding parts are covered by padding. The Sprint™ is a toy, not a means of transportation, and must not be used on vehicular rights-of-way, parking lots, or other areas used by motor vehicles. Young children must be supervised at all times, and must wear proper certified bicycle safety helmets. The Sprint™ is designed for use on level or gently sloping ground. Children may have trouble stopping on steep inclines (over 5% grade).

Why the Sprint™  balance bikes are best for toddlers:

With the Sprint™, the rider learns balance first, pedaling last, in contrast with a normal bicycle fitted with training wheels.  Although opinions differ regarding which learning sequence is easier for most riders, it is generally agreed that a bicycle with pedals is too difficult for most very young children and that training wheels may encourage the rider to learn some bad habits which later must be unlearned. Children as young as 18 months can learn to ride a balance bicycle with a few hours' practice.
To function properly, a balance bicycle must be small enough that the rider can walk the bicycle while sitting comfortably in the saddle, putting both feet flat on the ground. The rider first walks the bicycle while standing over the saddle, then while sitting in the saddle. Eventually, the rider feels comfortable enough to run and "scoot" while riding the bicycle, then to lift both feet off the ground and cruise while balancing on the two wheels.

5 reasons why the Sprint™ balance bike is best:
1. The metal frames are strong enough to allow a curve or s-shape, allowing a larger open area between the seat and front wheel/steering column. This makes it much easier to jump forward down off the seat without any risk of the child hitting a higher connecting bar, as in all the wood bikes. I.e., the metal bikes are built like "girl's bikes". This increases initial confidence and comfort for the new rider.
2. The strength and formability of metal allows for tube-within-tube design and clamping, so handlebar and seat height are infinitely adjustable. Precisely adjusted seat height is especially critical in getting a child comfortable for his first ride. When we play-tested the Scootercycle, the only initial difficulty our athletically gifted 2 1/2 year old guinea pig had was in getting comfortable with seating position, for this exact reason, and because of reason #1.
3. Tube-within-tube design and clamping also allow the steering column to be completely enclosed, thereby excluding any chance of pinched fingers.
4. Metal allows easier installation of extras such as handbrake and kickstand. I am not aware of any wood bike that has these.
5. The metal bikes are a great deal more durable, especially in the critical joint between handlebars and steering column. Our Scootercycles were beautifully built, but under daily pounding the area of the steering column into which the handlebars are screwed disintegrated into splinters after 6 months. It might have lasted a little longer with a less athletic child. We reconstructed it with steel plates and epoxy. Other brands such as Skuut have what I regard as structural design errors that I believe will shorten their useful lifetimes.

History of the Velocipede or Balance Bicycle (Running or Walking Bike):

The "dandy horse" was invented by Baron Karl von Drais in Mannheim, Germany, patented in January 1818; Drais's name for it was Laufmaschine (German for "running machine"), and it also became known as a velocipede.
The dandy-horse was a two-wheeled vehicle, with both wheels in-line, propelled by the rider pushing along the ground with his feet as in regular walking or running. The front wheel and handlebar assembly was pivoted to allow steering.
The Kettler Standard of Quality
* Some Kettler products are now made in China.
These products are made to the exact same standards, with the same materials and processes used in the German-made products. Kettler conducts frequent, strict testing of all its products, whether made in Germany or in China.
Specifications have not been relaxed for the new Sprint Balance Bike.
* Kettler has been building high quality steel and plastic bicycles and tricycles, children's outdoor play equipment, fitness equipment and game tables since 1949.
* Kettler steel tubing is significantly heavier and more durable than tubing used in other brands.
* All steel parts are protected from corrosion inside and out by a safe, non-toxic, environment-friendly
  process.
* Handlebar and steering nuts are covered or padded, so there are no sharp edges that a child can contact
* Steel parts are finished with weather-proof and colorfast polyester powder coatings. Polyester coatings
are far more durable than any paint, and absolutely non-toxic. Most clothing these days has at least
  some polyester fiber in it!
* Polyester powder coatings have 5-year anti-fade guarantee
* Plastic parts are heavy-weight polyethylene: weather-proof, tough, resilient, unbreakable, and zero-toxicity. Neither plasticizers such as phthalates nor pigments such as lead are used in this kind of plastic, unlike formulations for PVC (vinyl).
Kettler Design and Engineering - maximum fun, maximum safety, healthy outdoor exercise
*  Kettler wheeled toys are user-friendly and safe by design: extremely durable, easy to use, exciting, and fun.
*  Kid enjoy outdoor fun in all weather with these weather-proof and easy-to-use vehicles
*  Kettler design anticipates the needs of parents for value, safety, and reliability.
*  There is a feeling of solidity and precision. Pedaling and steering is smoother and easier. Low center of
gravity and accurate steering geometry ensure safe, stable riding for active and athletic kids of all ages.
* All Kettler wheeled toys are built to sustain loads well in excess of their expected age-range use.
