| The now-transparent shell of the chrysalis continues to fragment as the mature monarch emerges. The butterfly has in fact attained its full size as a chrysalis. |

Most of the mass is fluid in its abdomen, which will be pumped into the crumpled and tightly folded wings after the butterfly is free, causing them to expand to full size. |
