This style of architecture originated in Greece, and
was adopted later by the Romans, along with pretty much their whole culture.
(Don't send us email about that statement. We don't pretend to be classical
scholars.) If you look closely at the columns on the structure on the
Assortments Page 2 (previous page), you will notice they have a very
gradual, precise curved taper from bottom to top. This served to
enhance the apparent height of the building by tricking the eye's perception
of perspective. The building is probably the Parthenon, an ancient Greek
Temple. Suggested reading: For a wonderfully entertaining look at the earliest years of the Greek Empire, get a copy of The King Must Die by Mary Renault, and then read the sequel, The Bull from the Sea. They are historical novels about the life of the legendary King Theseus. It's too bad no one has made movies of them! |
