OFPA_why

State regulation, notably in California, has created a widely accepted and trusted standard which defines organic food in the sense most consumers of organic foods think of organic foods.

Hard to tell whether "org. foods" in supermarket are real. A USDA seal would be some help

Local control is always best. The various state certifying groups/agencies should harmonize their standards, & organic producers should use labels saying what state standard they are producing to,

I don't agree on pesticides and irradiation, please leave natural things clean and simple. Let's modifiy what needs to be modified to protect farmers instead of spend in poison, let's spend it in people. , let's modify rules to protect the people. Not destroy but build and laws protect.Brunella Thurston

We don't need a regulation that is going to define organic as something it is not. If I buy an organic product I want it to be free of chemicals, anitbiotics, and pesticides at the very least. I do not need the federal government to decide for me which products meet these criteria. Linda C. Michaels Gambier, Ohio

i don't WANT to eat irradiated, genetically engineered food, with tons o who knows what chemicals in them. we already have enough chemicals in what we eat, drink, breath and wear. NO MORE. let farmers be farmers and chemists be chemists, and leave organiz alone.

The gov't does not protect people. They protect businesses and industries. Organic foods do not provide any monetary income for the gov't. and their large, regulated agri-business. The only way the agri-businesses can "jump" into the Organic foods market without major structural change is through the proposed gov't low standards. Hands off!

I specifically spend more money for organic products and want to be assured that these items will be hormone and pesticide free and that the animals are treated in a humane way, prior to and during slaughter. So many of the health issues facing the human (and canine) population today are directly related to all of the garbage that is put into our foods. Pam Dennison, Hope, NJ

I actually have a different question: Do you know anything about the historical evolution of industry-led organic standards, or do you know of any article outlining the history?

Thanks, Carolyn

The process takes focus off a more potentially productive effort: that of co-ordinating standards among the private groups who are really involved in the production of organic foods.

I am not sure the OFPA should be repealled until we give it another shot with a new NOP. It is my contention that the current admin of the NOP is not capable of handling the many issues they have faced. if you have ever spoken with one of them, especially arthur neal, you probably agree. it seems that the purpose of arthur harvey's filing was at first achieved, but never came to fruition. someone or some entity didn't do their job in fulfilling the initial demands made of the NOP.
