HAND-CRANK SPEED WINDERS
Our Speed Winders make winding rubber motors on our airplanes fast and easy. These labor saving tools wind 5, 10, or 15 revolutions on the motor for every 1 handcranked turn. Requires 3 hands (i.e., you need a partner to hold the model).
To use, unhook the motor from the rear motor hook,

stretch the motor, and walk in toward the plane while winding, then re-attach the motor.
The 5:1 Winder works with all our rubber-powered planes, including ready-to-fly, as long as rubber motor can easily be unhooked from its rear attachment and re-attached. (e.g., not the Flyboy). The 5:1 is not a good choice for the Leading Edge or Sorcerer (too slow), and will not work with the Guillows Flyboy. We have reduced the price on the 5:1 winder from $7.50.

    Use our 15:1 and new 10:1 Rubber Winders for no-fuss, no-nonsense fast winding for competition events. These are absolutely necessary for the Cruiser or Sorcerer models (they require 1500 - 2000 winds). You cannot hand-wind these models, and the 5:1 is too slow. We have reduced the prices on these high-speed winders from $25.95.
     The new 10:1 winder is a little slower than the 15:1, but the 10 to 1 ratio allows easy and intuitive counting of winds - so important in contest flying! The 15:1 winder is the fastest simple hand-crank model available. The 10:1 and 15:1 are not recommended for the Guillow kits (Build-n-Fly, Ready-to-Fly).

Builders' Supplies
Grip Pins - a real necessity! More expensive than T-pins but sharper and much easier to use.
   These make the job easier, produce better quality work. Two structure sides can be duplicated, one one top of the other with wax paper in between, for symmetric structure precision. Also provides light clamping pressure for setting glue joints at any angle. Use the pin shoulders to hold the work, or pin through a piece of scrap used to press the work to the workboard. Gentle side pressure can be applied to keep joints in place while drying, and cambered ribs can be held vertical with 1 or 2 pins on each side of the rib. Note: Use very light pressure on balsa parts and do not pin through balsa on Cruiser or Sorcerer models!
   We suggest using an accurately flat, sufficiently large, soft balsa board, clean, flat heavyweight corrugated boxboard, 2'x2' ceiling tile, or dense insulation foam board as a construction surface for use with these pins. Cover work surface with wax paper to permit easy removal of finished assemblies.

Ambroid Cement
The choice of many experts. It is very forgiving, does not require joint pressure, and can be removed from an incorrectly built joint with acetone. Apply sparingly with toothpick or balsa sliver. Where weight is critical, do not follow tube directions; apply to one part only. Where strength is more important, apply to both parts, rub into wood and remove excess, allow to dry a few minutes, then reapply to one part and mate surfaces. Hold in place until dry with gentle pressure with pins. AMBROID IS NOT SOLD SEPARATELY - BUY WITH OTHER ITEMS.

We sell Ambroid Cement in either 1.8 oz or 1.0 oz tubes, whichever is available.

We also recommend a similar cellulosic solvent-based glue, that old standby Duco Cement
This is the same strong, reliable glue we were building models with 50 years ago. It's a little thicker than Ambroid, and can be cut with a small amount of acetone to adjust viscosity for lightweight structures such as airplanes.

Mylar Film
Use this in place of tissue where performance is critical. Paper-based tissue absorbs atmospheric moisture, and your wings, stab, and fin can be warped by changes in humidity.
We now offer 1.4µ Mylar film in rolls 12.5” x 10’, enough for covering several models. It is superior to tissue in several ways. It is included with the Cruiser kits, and may be purchased separately for the Sorcerers. We include updated instructions for use. Application takes some practice, but it is worth the effort.

Aero-Gloss Clear Brushing Lacquer
Use this clear finish to fill and seal wood surfaces that will not be covered by tissue. Allow 24 hours to dry, sand lightly with fine sandpaper to produce smooth surface, then paint. (You can't sand tissue covering!) May be used over Testors paint (see below) to add luster and depth to colors. Also apply to tissue covering to tighten and strengthen, and to provide a better base for painting. 1 ounce (29.5 ml) bottle is enough to do one large or several small models. Excel Single-edge razor blades
The experienced modelers' choice. More accurate and easier to control in some applications, and much sharper and smoother-cutting than other products. Our #376, #377, and #378 48-foot rubber motor thread is now genuine high-performance Tan Super- Sport Rubber, with the highest energy return of any rubber motor.
***If you are using our #376, 377, or 378 motors for high-performance competitive models like the Leading Edge, you MUST use O-rings and Lube, both sold below.

Care and selection of Rubber Motors for use with high-performance models:
1. For longest life and maximum performance, lubricate the rubber motors with Sil-Slick, available below. Y Store motors in marked Zip-Lock Bags. Use Speedwinders for proper stretch-winding (directions in model kit package), and always count winds. Use electric winder only for "fun" models, not for high-performance competition planes!! Select motor as recommended below, or according to weight specs and energy requirements, model weight and room dimensions, among other things.
The selection of a motor, and determination of length, is dependent in part on the ceiling height of the competition venue and the prop pitch angle. You need enough torque to get the plane up to the ceiling in a steady, gradual climb. The torque curve at that height should yield just enough to start the plane flying level, after which it descends under power. Also, the greater the prop pitch angle, the more torque you need. High ceiling, steep prop pitch indicates more rubber mass. A thinner rubber gets more winds and a shallow prop pitch, spins faster. A thinner rubber may not provide the power needed for climbing. Experiment! There is no straightforward formula for calculating this. Another variable is number of winds. Use #377 (3/32") for Leading Edge or Sorcerer.
Important: You MUST attach an O-ring (SOLD BELOW) to the tail end of the motor to facilitate removing and replacing the motor from the motor hook for winding. Hold the motor at 30 degrees from the fuselage while winding, and have your partner hold a cardboard sheet between the motor and fuselage to protect the airplane from damage if you lose control of the motor while winding. Wind about 1/3 to half the winds while stretching the motor to twice its length, then walk in slowly while winding the remainder.

IKARA Propellers
These are not the common "Ikara" props available elsewhere. These super-light props are designed specifically for endurance flying models. They have the most efficient configuration of camber and hub-pitch, and

are made of a paper-thin plastic which can easily be re-pitched or re-shaped with sharp scissors to provide maximum performance while complying with competition rules or torque requirements.
The thin plastic blades flex slightly to achieve a steeper pitch at the beginning of the flight to slow down the climb,
but then flex back to the original flatter pitch for the remainder of the flight, thereby making somewhat of a variable pitched prop.

Our new Ikara props are pre-assembled with hub, bearing, and motor hook, for rapid replacement in the event of prop damage.
Strongly recomended: Install a 1/8" Teflon washer on prop shaft - reduces friction, greatly enhances efficiency. Included at no charge with purchase of propellers, or available in bag of 6 washers.
Installation requires dis-assembling prop.

The "COMPLETE PACKAGE" includes 2 pre-assembled Ikara propellers, with prop hanger and rear motor hook for each propeller, and 2 Teflon washers. The propeller bearing plugs into a mating hole in the hanger, so a new prop can be swapped with a damaged one in seconds. BUY THIS ITEM FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION.

The "REPLACEMENT PACKAGE" includes 2 pre-assembled Ikara propellers, and 2 Teflon washers. Use these to replace damaged props. BUY THIS ITEM TO REPLACE BROKEN PROPS ON ALREADY-BUILT MODELS.

AMW-55 electronic digital pocket scale. 55g capacity, .01g resolution New for 2008!
The AMW-55 is a super-sensitive small scale that lets you weigh each component, each stick, so you can keep track of weight as you are building your model plane or bridge, and modify the parts before you install them. Repeatability is excellent: we found it to be within .03 g maximum across a small sampling of our first shipment. Accuracy seems excellent, too: We measured the weight of a paper clip on 4 scales at .44, .43, .44, and .45 g.
