North American Aviation's P-51 Mustang was originally designed for the British as a medium-altitude fighter in World War II. It was the first U.S. fighter airplane in Europe after the fall of France. Mustangs met and conquered every German plane from the early Junkers to the sleek, twin-jet Messerschmitt 262s. At least eight versions of the P-51 were produced. Improvements for special-purpose uses were incorporated in later models. Mustangs saw early combat in the Korean War. |

The Messerschmitt BF 109 might have been the plane that never was. In 1934 the German Air Ministry issued specifications for a new fighter monoplane, to be equipped with at least two machine guns and have the capability of utilizing the new liquid cooled V-12 engines developed by Junkers and Daimler-Benz. The request was sent to Focke-Wulf, Arado, Heinkel and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (Bavarian Aircraft Company/BFW) . The BF 109 was the winner in the trials. However, BFW was initially blocked from being sent contracts due to a long running feud between Willy Messerschmitt and the Secretary of State for Aviation, Erhard Milch. |

| To save BFW from bankruptcy, Messerschmitt obtained a contract from a Romanian cartel to develop the M-37 light transport, claiming that a lack of home support forced him to seek contracts outside Germany. The German government responded by awarding BFW the contract for fighter development. | ||
| The BF 109 was to become one of the Royal Air Force's major opponents in the Second World War, so it is ironic that the prototype had a 695 hp British Rolls-Royce engine when it made its debut in September 1935, as development of light weight aircraft military-type engines was prohibited under the Treaty Of Versailles. | ||
