The Cessna 170 was introduced in 1948, and became the biggest selling and most widely produced light aircraft in history. The original 1948 model single-engine four-seat plane had fabric-covered wings, V-shaped wings struts, and three fuel tanks for additional range. Late in 1948, Cessna replaced the fabric-covered wings with all-metal wings and changed the V-strut to a single strut configuration, creating the most recognizable variation of the aircraft, the Cessna 170A. . |

| The Cessna 170 evolved into an all-aluminum, high-winged, monocoque fuselage aircraft, with side-by-side seating, flat-spring steel landing gear and dependable engines. Known as a “good, honest taildragger,” a total of more than 5,000 Cessna 170s of all types were manufactured during the plane's six-year production run. Half of those aircraft were still flying as of 2001. | ||

| The Fairchild F-24 was produced from 1931 to 1946 as an economical and easy-to-fly touring aircraft, and became the plane of choice for many Hollywood stars, including Robert Taylor, Tyrone Power, Mary Pickford, and Jimmy Stewart. When the U.S. entered World War II, Fairchild's production line was diverted to the military and the F-24 became the Army's UC-61 Forwarder light utility transport and the Royal Air Force's Argus. |

Civilian versions of the planes were also pressed into service. Somewhere between 1,800 and 2,200 planes were built in total. Our model is based on the F-24R, which had an in-line engine, resulting in a longer and more streamlined nose. The F-24W had a radial engine, giving the plane a more stubby look. |
